Awake till 3’o clock in the morning? Listening to your favourite band? Trying to figure out as to how to play those tricky double bass triplet rides of your favourite song? Or watching videos on Youtube of your favourite drummer and relishing images in your mind of replacing him on that stage one day? If you can relate yourself to at least 2 of these conditions then you are living the awesome life as a Drummer! If you can’t, well then welcome to the life of Drummers!
Yes, we do get up late and really don’t have any plans for the day. The thought of going to college remains a mere thought! We do have a look at our drum kit every morning just to see everything is alright (wondering if some drummer, jealous of your lavish kit took your cymbals away in the darkness of night)
Your room is filthy, dirty clothes are lying all over the place, your mom is on your head to clean up everything but she does not notice that one thing which is shining like a diamond! That is your classy Drum Kit! The way we maintain our kit is akin to pampering our girlfriends, nurturing our baby, or probably handling it as GOLD. Yes, our rooms are dirty but we make sure that our kit does not even have a grain of dirt on it!
And Yeah! Nobody should dare to touch our Drum Kit let alone play it! Yes it badly hurts us! How hard and fast we play on our kit is up to us but if somebody else (Even if he/she is your best of friends) even tries to play on our kit, well the images of killing your friend are already up in mind (atleast it happens with me :p)
Well, as per a survey on “What Drummers Think about the Whole Day”, the following statistics reveal quite an interesting element of us!
All the Drummers, can you relate yourself to this picture? If yes, again you are living an awesome life!
Playing beats with your hands on our legs, on bed, on table, even on your face, car dashboard, anything and everything you can think of).
What we Drummers actually need to do is to transfer this energy and utilise our free time on to our kit. Yeah practising Paradiddles and all those rudiments can be really boring sometimes when you have to practice them every day, but accept this, this constant practice (regardless how much you get bored) along with playing at right gigs at the right time and not at every gig which is happening around (which I think is really important), will eventually take you forward on the path of replacing your favourite drummer on that very stage!
So, you know how awesome a drummer’s life is, you know what all you are missing, and you definitely know, how crazy and passionate, we drummers are for our drum kit and our love for drumming. If any of these things, excited even a single soul reading this, you know what I’d think- “Mission Accomplished”.3
